In most industries, there are no set standards for job titles, so your current position may be called something entirely different at another company. This doesn’t tend to cause too much of an issue, except when you’re searching for a new job. When you’re in this position, it can be very confusing to figure out what positions to apply for and how to present yourself.

Don’t Let Your Job Title Constrain You

If you’re concerned that your current job title will unfairly keep you from making it to the next level, there are a number of measures you can take to keep this from happening. Get the job you deserve by following these three steps:

  1. Research Alternative Job Titles: Conduct research to see what alternative job titles exist for your current position. Search for opportunities under each of these names to increase your chances of finding your ideal position. Some job search sites may even allow you to type certain skills or responsibilities into the search box, making it easier to find exactly what you want.
  2. Sell Your Experience in Your Cover Letter: You don’t want a hiring manager to glance at your application, see your job title and immediately discard you, so use your cover letter to explain why you’re a great fit for the job. Share your skills and experience relevant to the position, instead of stating your current job title itself, so it will be clearly obvious that you’re a qualified candidate.
  3. Include an Alternative Title on Your Resume: Get a little savvy on your resume and add in a job title next to your current position that is actually relevant to what you do. You can either supplement your job title such as, “Engineer Associate/Quality Engineer” or simply place it as an add on, by phrasing it “Engineer Associate (Quality Engineer).” This is a completely honest and straightforward way to present yourself as a great fit.
