In May 2017, the annual mean wage for professionals holding this job title in Chicago was $92,960, which is an increase from the $90,880 annual mean wage from the previous year, according to the BLS. This might not seem like a lot of money, but the salary increase signifies that job is still in demand.
Job Outlook for Civil Engineers
Advances in technology are quickly causing many fields to become obsolete, but civil engineering isn’t one of them. In fact, employment of civil engineers is expected to rise 11 percent from 2016 to 2026, compared with a projected 7 percent increase for all occupations, reported the BLS.
Much of the demand for civil engineers is fueled by the old infrastructure in place throughout much of the U.S. Companies will need professionals in these roles to help rebuild, repair and improve a wide-variety of structures, including bridges, roads and airports. The rapidly expanding population also creates a demand for new water systems and the careful maintenance of those currently in place, according to the BLS.
Beyond that, civil engineers will assist with innovative renewable energy projects, including wind farms and solar structures, according to the BLS. This type of work is very exciting, as it initiates a major shift that will impact everyone living in the U.S.
To gain a competitive edge, the BLS recommends participating in a co-op while still in college.
