Your employees spend the bulk of their day staring at a computer screen. On the surface, this might not seem like much of a safety hazard, but looks can be deceiving.

Roughly 80% of American adults use digital devices for more than two hours each day, according to The Vision Council. Consequently, it’s probably no coincidence that 32.4% experience eye strain — in addition to a myriad of other health issues.

As a compassionate employer, you want to help, but you’re not sure what can be done. Investing in lenses with blue light-filtering abilities — i.e., blue blocker lenses — can help relieve digital eye strain.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Recognized by the American Optometric Association, computer vision syndrome — CVS — refers to the eye and vision issues caused by working in front of a computer. Many people who frequently use a computer as part of their job suffer from eye-related discomfort and or issues with their vision.

Thankfully, the AOA doesn’t believe computer usage causes permanent changes or damage to the eyes, but it’s definitely a problem in the short-term. Standard eyeglasses and contact lenses are likely not enough to protect the eyes from computer screens. Instead, special lens are typically needed to combat the glare and reflections from these devices. In addition to the health benefits offered, this can increase the quality and efficiency of employees’ work.

Blue Blocker Lenses

Computer work exposes employees to high-energy visible — HEV — blue light. During the daytime hours, natural blue light helps keep the body awake and regulates the circadian rhythm. Of course, this light can also be emitted indoors from electronic devices and other artificial light sources.

Blue blocker lenses can help protect the eyes from rays that can cause discomfort and possibly damage. These lenses effectively block HEV blue light and offer UV protection.

Employees should get an eye exam to see if they need these lenses. Encourage your staff to take this step — maybe even offer eye exams onsite one day — because healthy employees are happier and produce higher quality work.
