You’re so excited to start this job, and you want to make sure you get off on the right foot. Use these tips to make your boss — and the rest of the team — sure they made the right decision.

Five Tips to Make a Great Impression on Your First Day at Work

Arrive Early — and Stay Late

It should go without saying that you need to be on time on your first day of work. However, take it up a notch by arriving a few minutes early. At the end of the day, instead of skipping out as soon as the clock strikes 5 p.m., wait until your boss dismisses you. Nothing says hard worker like staying put until the job is done.

Dress to Impress

The manner in which you present yourself speaks volumes. Spend a little time getting extra polished on your first day — i.e., choose your outfit the night before and take time to ensure you’re neatly groomed — so you look your best. This will show your enthusiasm for the job and make you feel extra confident.

Be Friendly

No doubt, your new colleagues are very eager to have you onboard. Start the bonding process by being warm and welcoming during introductions. If you’re invited out to lunch, accept the invitation — even if you brought your lunch — as failing to do so will send the impression you’re not eager to get to know your new co-workers.

Ask Lots of Questions

There’s no such thing as asking too many questions on your first day of work. When in doubt about anything, always ask. This shows your desire to get acclimated and do things right. In fact, if you don’t ask questions, it will send the impression that you’re not interested in learning the ropes.

Display Gratitude

Some people will help you more on your first day than others. At the end of the day, take these people aside or send them an email to say thank you. Going out of your way to show appreciation will highlight your true personality and make them feel pleased to have assisted you. They’ll also be more willing to help you out in the future because they’ll know you’re grateful.
